Why we procrastinate: Margaret Lambert
Why we procrastinate: Margaret Lambert

Procrastination is a form of self sabotage, writes psychologist, author and speaker MARGARET LAMBERT in her latest column.

Do you find yourself putting off the commencement or the completion of particular projects?

Do you often have the thought “I can do it later on” or that something needs to happen first before you can act?

Mostly these are just forms of procrastination.

Many of us procrastinate – it is a common form of self-sabotage.

This means that our procrastination stops us from achieving the very thing we are wanting to achieve.

Why would we do this?

Surely we want to follow through and complete the task or achieve the goal.

Even though we may have goals in place, there are some underlying and powerful reasons that get in the way of us getting the job done, and this presents an internal conflict.

What are some of the underlying reasons that people would sabotage the achievement of their goals?

It may be that:

• they are fearful that the outcome will fall short of their expectations or the expectation of others – it won’t be perfect;

• they are angry or resentful towards someone, perhaps someone in authority;

• they fear being judged and being exposed to the criticism of others

Until the underlying beliefs are dealt with, it is likely that procrastination will continue to be prominent in your life, and stop you completing tasks.

To find the underlying beliefs involved in your procrastination do the following:

Think of one thing that you want to achieve.

Ask yourself what is the down side if you completed it?

Your responses to this will be the aspects that you must clear up first in order to pave the way for you to act.

A great tool to help you deal with these aspects is EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or Tapping.

You can find out more about EFT on my webpage here and you can find many videos on YouTube.

If you get stuck with how to use EFT or what to say when you use it, please get in touch.

Until next time,

Marg
