Margaret Shafer was shocked when MP Greg Warren dropped by her work place – Ken Shafer Auto Body on Blaxland Road – to tell her she was the 2019 Campbelltown Local Woman of the Year.

Not that honours are rare for the 77 year old: she has received, among others, the Medal of the Order of Australia, Rotary Club’s prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship and was selected to carry the Olympic torch through Campbelltown in 2000.

Every local MP in NSW chooses a woman of the year every 12 months and Mr Warren says choosing Margaret Shafer was a “no brainer’’.

“Margaret embodies what the spirit of Campbelltown is all about,’’ he said.

“She has donated countless hours of her time towards helping out those who are less fortunate or in need of a helping hand.

“She is selfless, passionate about our area, and always focused on making the lives of others much better.

“I congratulate Margaret on being named the 2019 Campbelltown Local Woman of the Year – it is an accolade that is truly well deserved.’’

  • Four inspiring home grown thought leaders will headline Campbelltown’s first Women in the Workplace Symposium networking event next month.

The free evening will cover topics including: personal branding, image and styling, job searching, interview skills, mental health and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Fashion stylist Antoinette Stonham, HR specialist Melissa Owen, financial advisor Clare McCabe and mental health and lifestyle counsellor Cheryl Paradella will each give their insights during the event at the Campbelltown Arts Centre.

“It’s common knowledge getting back into the workforce when you have had a few years away, whether starting a family or for some other reason, can be a daunting, sometimes overwhelming process,” Mayor George Brticevic said.

“This symposium is aimed at reassuring and motivating women with some helpful, practical advice. Getting the balance right between work and having a healthy lifestyle and mental outlook is equally important,” said Cr Brticevic.

“With the wealth of local talented and successful women in the workplace, Council felt it was time to tap into that knowledge and also provide a friendly, informal environment for those in the area to network about business and best practice.”

The four 20-minute talks will be followed by a Q&A session and an informal meet and greet networking session.

The free event is from 5pm-7.30pm, Wednesday, March 20, at Campbelltown Arts Centre. To book a spot go to www.campbelltown.nsw.gov.au/WhatsOn/WomenInTheWorkplaceSymposium
