Magpies stop Tigers in grand final replay

In one side affairs, Camden defeated Campbelltown City 32-4 in round seven of the Group Six competition, Thirlmere dominated Oakdale 46-10 at Sid Sharpe Oval, while Narellan Jets romped home 74-6 over an understrength Moss Vale.

The exception of the round was at Victoria Park, where the Picton Magpies ground out a determined 20-14 win over The Oaks Tigers in a tight tussle.

The grand final replay was littered with errors from both sides, reports MIKE SHEAN.

The opening try of the game came on 11 minutes, when new centre for The Oaks Jeff Wright scored. Wright was a danger for the Tigers throughout the afternoon, and ended with a double, bookending the day’s scoring.

Minutes after Wright’s first try, Picton halfback Tim Dengate scored to open the home side’s account and level the score.

Hard working Picton lock Matt White scored on 27 minutes, with what was becoming a real battle between the competition heavyweights, as neither gave any ground in attack or defence.

The grand final replay was an arm wrestle.

The Oaks replied through front rower James Kovac to regain the lead at 10-8.

Magpies returned serve through big centre Nathan Davis and as a result Picton headed to the rooms with their noses in front at 14-10.

The second half was an even tougher affair, as neither side was able to take control of the match.

The opening try came after 15 minutes when Picton’s five eighth Damon New crashed over to score, and extend the home side’s lead to 10 points.

The Oaks had several scoring chances in the closing stages of the second half, but the defence from Picton, especially on their own line, was excellent, as they repeatedly held off the Tigers’ advances.

The Tigers attacked the Picton left wing, but the new combination of Wright, and Chris Hodge, a utility who was forced to play on the wing, couldn’t combine to cross the line.

Wright eventually scored his second try late in the match for a 20-14 scoreline but that’s where it stayed until the very end.

Six Tigers defenders get ready to pounce on a Magpie attacking raid.
