Drop in parking fines no excuse to break road rules, says mayor

With a number of parking fines set to be reduced from Friday, March 1, Camden mayor Peter Sidgreaves has cautioned residents not to reduce their commitment to road safety.

 Last December Camden Council voted unanimously to opt into an NSW Government scheme that slashed 52 fines from $112 to $80.

The scheme includes offences like stopping or parking in restricted areas, using more parking bays than necessary and failure to comply with parking direction, but will not apply to school zone offences.

“There are a lot of pressures on families, particularly on young families, and I am supportive of alleviating these pressures where we can,” says Cr Sidgreaves, pictured above.

“However, this is absolutely not an excuse to do the wrong thing.

“As a father of four young girls, I know how important it is to be safe on our roads and to come home to my family each night – and that means following the rules that have been put in place to do just that,” he said.

Council has a number of initiatives and events designed to educate, practise and implement road safety. Upcoming events include:

 • The Learner Log Book Run organised drive, which includes breath testing, license registration; vehicle checks and speed monitoring. Held four times every year, the next event will be held on Sunday, March 3);

• Occupant restraint fitting and checking days, where residents can have child car restraints, harnesses and booster seats checked for safety and correct fit. Also held four times a year, the next event will be held on Thursday, March 7;

• The Drivers for Learners in Macarthur booklet, which provides learners and their supervisors with pre-planned routes to increase experience. Booklets, which are compiled in partnership with Campbelltown City Council, are available at the Camden Council Administration Building, Campbelltown City Council office and Service NSW, Gregory Hills.
