Camden primary schools can nominate one Year 6 student to participate in the mayor for a day public speaking competition.

The competition is part of Local Government Week celebrations, from Tuesday, July 31 to Monday 6 August.

Mayor Lara Symkowiak said the annual event was an opportunity for young people to share their vision for the future of Camden.

“Each year our young students impress me with their ideas to improve our area, which is why we believe it is so important to provide a platform for our young people to have a voice,” Cr Symkowiak said.

“These are our future leaders, and we are proud to be able to help them thrive and connect to our community from a young age,” she said.

Nominated students will represent their school by presenting a five-minute speech about why they would like to be the mayor of Camden, and what they would do for the area.

Speakers will be assessed on their presentation, knowledge of local government and the Camden area, and their ideas to improve the area.

All participating students will be taken on a tour of the mayor’s offices, and the winner will be invited to wear the mayoral robe and chains and have photos for the media.

The Mayor for a Day event will be held at 11am, Friday, August 3 at Camden Council’s administration building in Oran Park.
