Weather permitting, within 12 months the residents of Wedderburn will have a bridge that connects them to the rest of Campbelltown and Macarthur – rain, hail or shine.

For years Wedderburn residents were a bridge too far and isolated when there was heavy rain and the causeway on the Georges River flooded.

But thanks to funding from the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program, work started recently on an allweather bridge over the causeway.

Campbelltown ratepayers are chipping in half the cost of the new bridge, $1.63 million, with the federal government matching council’s contribution.

After an inspection of the bridge works with Marise Payne, Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, the mayor of Campbelltown, George Brticevic, said the new bridge will ensure the vital road link remained open in periods of extreme weather.

“Residents of Wedderburn have been calling for this bridge to be built for a number of years,” Cr Brticevic said.

Senator Payne, who is also Foreign Minister in the Scott Morrison government, said the new bridge will provide major safety improvements.

“This project, which will be completed within a year, weather permitting, is a great outcome for the local community who have been fighting for an upgrade to the causeway,” Senator Payne said during the site inspection.

“The new bridge will substantially reduce travel times for both cars and freight vehicles travelling between Wedderburn and Campbelltown, especially when water levels in the Georges River rise.”
