Boost for the region: Liverpool mayor Wendy Waller has backed the Federal Government decision to finance and build Badgerys Creek international airport.

Liverpool Council is the latest organisation to back the Federal Government decision to finance and build the proposed international airport at Badgerys Creek.

“Liverpool City Council welcomes the Federal Government’s decision to take on the task of building Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek,’’ said the mayor, Cr Wendy Waller.

“The main issue now for our community is to ensure that the new airport is built on time and with the right rail connections.

“By 2026 we want the airport to be operational with appropriate rail connections – such as an extension of the Leppington rail spur or a separate Fast Rail link,’’ Cr Waller said.

“The Federal Government needs to work with Liverpool Council and the local community to get the job done on time.’’

Cr Waller reinforced the point that Western Sydney Airport will be a game changer for the South West Sydney region through job creation and the significant federal investment in roads and public transport infrastructure that has already begun and will continue.

This investment in roads and public transport includes $3.6 billion in the Liverpool Local Government Area.

Building the airport is expected to create more than 11,000 construction jobs, most of which will be filled by workers from Western Sydney.

And when it opens around 2025, the airport will service between six and eight million passengers in its first year, creating a further 4,500 and 6,000 jobs.

[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“Many of these jobs will be for our local residents – currently about 70 per cent of Liverpool workers leave the area each day to go to work,’’ Cr Waller said.[/social_quote]

“The new airport, along with new public transport and roads has the potential to create sustainable local jobs for our region.

“Council continues to work closely with all levels of government to maximise the new airport’s economic benefits and minimise the impacts through coordinated land use and infrastructure planning.’’
