Our roofs could be the biggest power plant in the country

Our roofs the biggest power plant in Australia?
Is the biggest power plant in Australia on our roofs?

The millions of Australians with solar on their roof can help revolutionise the electricity system for the better.

As energy ministers meet to draw up plans to tackle increasing power prices, it’s agreed batteries are an important part of the solution.

The question is: will these batteries be owned by energy companies or Australia’s homes and businesses?

Energy software company Reposit Power says families and business owners already have the means to improve the energy system.

Reposit Power was founded in Canberra four years ago as a small tech start up company with big ideas.

Reposit co-founder Lachlan Blackhall says households and businesses with solar batteries can pump clean energy into the electricity grid when demand for power is high.

“Households buy batteries to help them get solar into their homes during the evening,’’ says Mr Blackhall.

“With Reposit, these same batteries can also step in when a price spike occurs in the grid.

“Because these batteries are doing two jobs at once, it is far cheaper than single purpose containerised batteries,” he said.

Reposit produces a device that tranforms solar batteries into “mini power stations”, allowing the trading of solar power in the wholesale markets.

As well as helping families to reduce their power bills, the set up can keep a lid on market volatility.

Mr Blackhall says Australian households have already shown they want to be part of the solution.

“We lead the world in roof-top solar energy, we should help these same households solve the stability issue by adding batteries.

“Adding batteries with Reposit’s technology will ensure our grid is cleaner, cheaper, and much fairer for consumers.’’
