Campbelltown university student Riley Alcorn has set up his own tutoring business to help create a level playing field for kids in Macarthur.

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]uring his HSC year, Riley Alcorn turned to tutoring to improve his English result.

The tutoring paid off and the Kentlyn teenager is studying for a Science degree at Sydney University.

Riley, who attended St Thomas More and then St Gregory’s College, has now also set up his own tutoring company to serve the Macarthur region.

“Tutoring is about creating a level playing for every child that falls through the cracks,’’ says Riley.

His company, Band 6 Tutoring, has enlisted the services of other locals who are studying at university and have an aptitude for tutoring others.

Riley says he dabbled in tutoring when he was younger, mostly children of family and friends.

One was at the bottom of the class when Riley tutored her over a lengthy period and “she ended up second or third in her assignment’’.

Riley says tutoring is not just for kids that fall through the cracks for whatever reason.

“All our tutors can teach to band six – they are able to help both those who are struggling or are just doing OK or even those who are quite good at their subjects but aiming for 5, 10 marks more in their subjects,’’ he says.

“Kids have different learning styles, and there are some who need a bit of a hand that they wouldn’t get in a classroom environment.

Riley says Band 6 Tutoring offers specialised tutors for juniors and seniors, from Year 4 to Year 12, in all subjects.

“For an individual program we do an assessment for each child, we analyse why they may be struggling in a particular area at school, what learning style would help them best, and we get the tutors to set the structure around that,’’ says Riley.

All of the Band 6 Tutoring tutors are from the Macarthur region and lessons usually take place in a library setting.

“We do have several venues, but we can go to their home if they feel more comfortable in that environment,’’ says Riley.

“Group sessions are held in a library, but we have a variety of individual and group sessions available of varying numbers and length of tutorials.
