Puppy left in car: woman faces animal cruelty charge

A seven week old puppy was left in a parked car at the Oran Park shopping centre carpark during Saturday’s heatwave.

Allegedly seeing the puppy in distress, shoppers called police.

Officers from the Camden Local Area Command who responded to the call gave the dog water and then placed it inside an air-conditioned police vehicle.

The call to police was made at 2.40pm.

About 3.15pm a 28 year old Oran Park woman returned to the vehicle and was spoken to by the police officers.

She was subsequently charged with animal cruelty – being in charge of an animal and failing to exercise care – and will appear before Picton Local Court on Tuesday, February 27.

Police meanwhile will continue to liaise with the RSPCA NSW over the welfare of the dog.
