Proud Kangaroos put in big effort on special day

Camden Rams have defeated an understrength Oakdale Workers side 16-4 at Harvey Shephard Field in round six of the premiership.

Playing at home, the Mittagong Lions held off Narellan Jets to win 20-10, while Thirlmere Roosters proved way too strong for Moss Vale Dragons in recording an 84-0 victory in front of their fans.

In the final match of the round, the Campbelltown City Kangaroos can hold their heads high despite going down to Picton Magpies yesterday at Fullwood Reserve in the annual Ron Kain Memorial Shield clash.

AS MIKE SHEAN reports, the final scoreline, 48-18 to the visitors, did not reflect the closeness of the match, which raises money for research into motor neurone disease (MND).

A healthy crowd on a perfect autumn afternoon was the scene at Fullwood Reserve in Campbelltown, where both teams started the match determined to attack the opposition’s try line.

The Kangaroos were the first to bother the scoreboard attendants when Ihaia Kohonui crossed with just four minutes on the clock.

Bryce Hoskin bagged the first try for the Magpies six minutes later, but the home side responded when centre Jacob Wright crossed at the halfway mark of the first stanza.

Picton captain coach Michael Lett, who played on the right wing, got his first try almost immediately after.

Campbelltown City try to stop a Magpies attacking raid yesterday at Fullwood reserve.

Lett had his second minutes later to have Picton leading 20-12.

When Damon New crossed on the stroke of halftime the visitors headed to the sheds with a 26-12 lead at the break.

Campbelltown City were the first to score in the second half, courtesy of their halfback Michael Stevens, reducing the deficit to just eight points.

Big Picton centre Nathan Davis, who was a constant danger on the left edge for the Magpies, crossed with just over 20 minutes remaining, and when Lett bagged his third try it looked like the Kangaroos would need a miracle to win their first match of the season.

The scoreline blew out to 48-18 when the Magpies scored two more tries, but it did not detract from an admirable performance from the Kangaroos.

Campbelltown City would have been pleased with their efforts, and coaching staff, led by Stevens and hard running front rower Tuki Jackson, will know reinforcements in the coming weeks will make their fight up the ladder much easier.

Good cause: Picton Magpies captain coach Michael Lett accepting the Ron Kain Memorial Shield from members of the Kain family. Funds raised on the day go towards Motor Neurone Disease research.
