Proposed RSL apartment buildings to tower over Queen Street

A proposal for three giant towers of 23, 20 and 17 storeys which could revive Campbelltown’s main street is set to get the green light from Campbelltown Council.

Councillors will decide the fate of the multi million dollar proposal by Campbelltown RSL at a meeting tomorrow night.

Essentially the councillors will be voting to amend their own building height regulations to allow the development to go ahead.

Currently there is a limit of 10 storeys in and around the Queen Street business district, once a thriving town centre that’s been in decline for a decade or more.

The South West Voice understands there is enough support for the proposal among councillors for it to be approved.

The RSL wants to build three towers for a hotel, residential apartments, commercial and retail premises as well as an entertainment plaza.

A report to council for tomorrow night’s meeting says the proposal is consistent with the Greater Sydney Region plan and Western City District plan by providing additional commercial and retail spaces and residential housing in close proximity to transport and employment opportunities.

“The proposed hotel facility would provide visitor accommodation within the Campbelltown CBD to serve both visitors to the club and commercial core of Campbelltown and surrounding suburbs,’’ says the report.

“It would revitalise the Campbelltown commercial core by providing new commercial opportunities and residential accommodation in close proximity to transport and existing large scale retail shops such as Coles and Woolworths.’’

If approved and built the new RSL club would face Queen Street as would the nine storey hotel above it.

The proposed 17 storey building would face Cordeaux Street and would include retail and commercial space on the ground floor and 17 storeys of residential apartments – around 129 units

There will also be retail and commercial space included in the third building of 23 storeys and which would face Carberry Lane.

This would offer 150 residential units.

The third building is proposed to face Anzac Lane and would also include commercial and retail space and 159 residential units over 20 storeys

As part of the plan the RSL proposes to include an outdoor entertainment plaza located centrally between the three towers.

While the council officers have recommended that the proposal get the green light, it will have to go through a number of hoops before final approval.

This will include heritage impact assessment, detailed traffic impact study and shadow analysis, as well as a comprehensive public domain plan.
