Magpies and Eagles local derby
The first grade players about to run on to the field of play in the Western Suburbs Magpies and East Campbelltown Eagles local derby for Sydney Shield on Saturday afternoon. The Magpies won 42-12.

Western Suburbs Magpies were too good for the East Campbelltown Eagles when the two local sides clashed in round seven of the Sydney Shield rugby league competition last Saturday.

The Magpies romped home 42-12 in the Campbelltown Sport Stadium encounter.

But the win wasn’t enough for the home side to overtake the Eagles on the Sydney Shield ladder.

East Campbelltown Eagles are 10th on the 12 team competition table and stay ahead of their cross town rivals on better for and against numbers.

The Magpies are languishing in 11th with only Moorebank below them in the wooden spoon spot at this early stage of the 2017 premiership.

In round eight, the East Campbelltown Eagles, who are the defending premiers, are back home at Waminda Oval next Sunday.

The Eagles will be hosting the Asquith Magpies, currently fifth on the ladder.

It will be a 2.30pm kick off in first grade.

♦ There were no Group Six Country rugby league matches over the Easter weekend.

The competition, already hit hard by the big wet of early autumn, returns for round three action this weekend.

The match of the round could quite possibly be the clash between Campbelltown City Kangaroos and the Narellan Jets from 3pm on Sunday, April 23.

A good crowd is set to be in attendance – especially if the weather is kind to Group 6 for a change this season.

The Liam Fulton coached side has served notice that it will be a force to be reckoned with in 2017 and the Jets match will be an opportunity to reinforce that message to the rest of the competition.

♦ Still on rugby league, don’t forget to watch the Wests Tigers as they try to win back to back matches for the first time in 2017.

The Tigers are up against Parramatta from 4pm at ANZ Stadium in round seven of the NRL and it’s expected to be a cracker.

All eyes will be on Mitchell Moses, who has signed for the Eels for 2018 but with many pundits suggesting he will be playing for them from round eight onwards.
