Steely eyes: Local over 35 masters hockey team goal-keeper Trent Knights is ready to pounce during the recent NSW Indoor State championships at Goulburn last week

Men’s masters hockey is continuing to grow in popularity in Macarthur.

The local association, South West Metro, now boasts more than 160 masters aged men’s players.

It is the second largest number of masters’ players behind the exceptionally strong Newcastle region.

The South West Metro association fielded four teams in the NSW Indoor Championships staged at Veolia Arena Goulburn during February 9-11.

As in previous years, the over 35 aged competition was again fiercely fought out between the teams representing different associations.

Local masters coordinator Danny Foreman said it was an exceptionally hot weekend in downtown Goulburn, but that the temperature was not a scratch on the heat generated inside the two indoor hockey halls.

“I always feel sorry for our goal-keepers when the temperature is this hot, with all of their much needed safety padding helmets and exceptional amount of work they have to do, ,’’ Mr Foreman said.

Indoor A grade and NSW over 35s state goal-keeper Trent Knights agreed.

“The workload on keepers at this level is just amazing,’’ he said.

Our local A grade team could not match their results of previous years, and despite winning some of their matches went down to the local Goulburn team in the final round of competition.

The strong Nepean team took out the final honours, with Orange winning the B grade final.
