With this magic wand wishes come true at Christmas

Here we are now, barely a month before another Christmas Day.

No point pondering where the year’s gone, better to look forward to the festive season.

It’s a wonderful time of the year for most of us, a time when even wishes can sometimes come true.

Children will sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what they wish to find under the tree on Christmas Day.

Mums and dads will be running around like crazy putting the big day’s feast together.

And for just one day, December 25, time will stand still as we share the joy with those we love and cherish.

But the grown-ups will spare a thought about those fellow human beings who won’t be at home to enjoy Christmas Day – for whatever reason.

They will do more than just think about the reality outside their home. For a moment or two they will wish they had the power to do something about some of the big problems of the world.

If you had that power, what things would you fix?

Here’s the Top 5 things we’d change if there was such a thing as a magic wand and we got to have it for a day:

Number 1. Hunger. It is so tragic that so many people around the world go hungry every day while at the same time humans throw away about a third of all food produced.

Number 2. Refugees. It’s incredible to think the United Nations is so impotent and can’t help the millions of people who need to be re-settled. Give me that wand.

Number 3. Terrorism and war. Well, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing, as the song says.

Number 4. End the carnage on our roads. So many people dying, so needlessly.

Number 5. Make democracy work for the good of the people again instead of serving the interests of the rich and powerful few.
