St Michaels Golf Club member John Lyras has qualified for the 2016 NSW Open championship after a superlative effort at Camden Golf Club over the past two days.

Lyras led by a stroke after hitting 66 on the par 72 Studley Park course on day one yesterday in a field of 48 hopefuls.

He didn’t do too well today, ending even on 72 after the second round was completed earlier today. His aggregate score was 138.

But that was enough to finish first and earn qualification to the 2016 Open.

Lyras ended up with a one stroke advantage over Castle Hill golfer Jordan Garner, who finished with a combined score of 139, just one off the pace.

Garner hit 71 today, one under the course par.

In third place was Corey Rae, from Cromer (142), followed by Zinyo Garcia of Catalina (145) and another Castle Hill golfer, Daniel Gale, in fifth place (145).

No locals finished inside the top 10 in the leaderboard, with Camden’s Lindsay Hudson claiming 17th place after scores of 78 and 73.

Ben Watkins, another Camden local, finished up in 32nd place after scores of 82 and 80.

This qualifying round at Camden Golf Club – which was sponsored by Camden Council – is one of several held across a number of golf courses and from where the winner goes straight into the Open.

The 2016 NSW Open will be held between November 10 and 13 at the Greg Norman designed Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club.
