Liverpool City Council is now one of only 12 local council areas in Australia to be accepted as part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC) Network across 27 countries.

It is one of only three in NSW, which according to Liverpool City Mayor, Ned Mannoun, is a significant achievement.

“Our commitment to being an age-friendly community in Liverpool is now even more prominent by accepting this global membership,” Mr Mannoun said.

The network was established to foster the exchange of experience and mutual understanding on age-friendly communities.

“As a new member Liverpool is now able to join in that exclusive two-way sharing process,” the mayor said.

“Liverpool is now part of a growing global movement of cities and communities that are striving to create urban environments that foster healthy and active ageing and the wellbeing of older people.’’

Being part of the Global Network gives council the opportunity to:

· Link with participating cities and share information, expertise and technical assistance;

· Facilitate the exchange of information and best practice with participating cities;

· Provide programs that are sustainable and cost-effective for improving the lives of older people;

· Promote and brand Liverpool City as a centre for business and services that cater to the needs of older consumers, and

· Promote Liverpool as one of an innovative group of cities leading the world in supporting active ageing.

“Council has also strengthened its commitment to being a more inclusive and active community with the introduction of its recently adopted Ageing Strategy and Action Plan

2014 – 2017,” Mr Mannoun said.

“Council recognises the significant contribution that seniors make to all aspects of civic, economic and cultural life.’’

Through the Ageing Strategy, council commits to working with seniors and others in order to ensure that seniors have expanded opportunities to experience, and contribute to the vibrancy of Liverpool.
