Liverpool councillors on a mission in the USA

AT ITS last meeting of the year, Liverpool Council approved the spending of $40,000 towards a trip to the Unites States next year. Council voted for the mayor (Ned Mannoun) and the CEO or his delegate, and councillors Gus Balloot, Tony Hadchiti, Ali Karnib and the deputy mayor, Cr Peter Ristevski to fly off to the States in June as part of something called “Future Cities Collaborative overseas mission’’. What is this mission’s mission? According to the council report tabled at the December meeting it is to “examine Local Infrastructure Finance Mechanisms’’. And the $40,000 will come from something called the “Councillor Reserve’’, but it is still ratepayers’ money. And not only is this mission going to cost Liverpool 40 big ones, but the council meeting of June 24, 2015 has had to be rescheduled to June 17 to allow for the fact that the mayor and four other councilors would not have been present at the later date.

George Kapiniaris is Zorba the Freak! at Casula Powerhouse on February 20.

HERE is an early call to all those who enjoyed the comedy of the Wog Boy: Comic George Kapiniaris will star in Zorba the Freak! at the Casula Powerhouse arts centre theatre on Friday, February 20. It’s all about the funny side of growing up Greek in Australia. Which is pretty much the same as saying growing up Serbian, Italian, Vietnamese or Indian in Australia. Put it in your diaries, it should be a hoot. There will be two shows on the day, a matinee at 2pm and evening at 7pm so it’s probably best to book for this one. Ring 9824 1121.
TALKING about early tips, here’s one on politics, the rise of the Voluntary Euthanasia Party. It’s a very controversial subject, sure, but a very serious one nonetheless. Some people expect them to do well for the upper house in NSW. Shayne Higson, the party’s state convenor is also its lead upper house candidate for the coming March election. “We hope that voters in NSW will consider their vote in 2015 and show their support for law reform by voting for the Voluntary Euthanasia Party,’’ Ms Higson said.

Big guys: the two new residents at Mogo Zoo.

AND finally, it is the holidays and many of us do a bit of travelling around this time of the year, so if you’re heading down south, take the kids to the Mogo Zoo. Located near Batemans Bay, Mogo Zoo just welcomed two new residents, two very big dudes, Kei and Jabari. Weighing up to 4,000kg and standing up to 1.8 metres tall, Kei and Jabari, a pair of male Southern White rhinos, made the long journey south to Mogo earlier this week the night from Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast.
