Local legend: Liam Fulton has been appointed coach of the Campbelltown City Kangaroos.

Liam Fulton was a local junior who went on to become a premiership winning player with the Wests Tigers in 2005.

Now he is back where he started.

In a stunning coup, the Campbelltown City Kangaroos rugby league football club have signed Fulton as their first grade coach for 2017.

The 162 NRL game veteran and City Origin representative will bring his vast knowledge and experience to Campbelltown’s oldest and most famous sporting club.

Training starts next week and Fulton can’t wait to get started.

“I’m really excited to be giving this a go,” Fulton said after the announcement of his posting as Kangaroos coach.

“I proudly call myself a local product, coming through the Wests Magpies junior representative ranks and getting my opportunity there.

“The least I can do is give back to the game in this region,’’ Fulton said.

“I’ve long held ambitions to coach, and this allows me to dip my toe in the water, so to speak.’’

Fulton said that the Kangaroos had signed well and had also retained a lot of their core first graders heading into the 2017 Group Six rugby league premiership.

“My goal is to get the boys enjoying their training and enjoying each other’s company.

“I don’t know anyone, so everyone is starting with a fresh slate,’’ Fulton said.

Club chairman Brian Brown congratulated Fulton on his appointment.

“It is an honour that Liam has agreed to join the Campbelltown City Kangaroos Rugby League Football Club,’’ Mr Brown said.

“Liam was a thinking man’s footballer and will transfer this to his coaching.

“He’ll be a coach that players will learn a lot from and want to play for.

“Our club has always led the way in bringing top-line coaches and new ideas to Group 6.

“Liam follows in the traditions of Ray Corkery, Johnny Greaves and Paul Murray.

“Hopefully he’ll be as successful as his forebears.’’

“We welcome all players – under 18s, reserves and first graders – to start training with us on Tuesday, January 17,’’ Fulton said.
