Jobs night for youth a game changer for Joshua, 15

Joshua Reid, 15, picked up a pre-apprenticeship at an mwlp linking youth information night.

Smooth sailing: Joshua Reid, 15, picked up a pre-apprenticeship at an mwlp linking youth information night.

Joshua Reid, 15 years old and disengaged from school, attended the recent mwlp linking youth Jobs for Youth Night with mum Claire.

Over 300 guests attended the apprenticeship and traineeship information night held at Wests Leagues Club, where they heard from experts and learnt about the many opportunities available.

Representatives of local employers, group training organisations, state training services and TAFE answered many questions.

Attendees were then able to choose the relevant employers and/or group training organisations to speak to about various careers.

Joshua was linked with TABMA who specialise in the employment of trainees and apprentices within the timber, construction, forestry, furnishing and manufacturing industries across Australia.

The result of that discussion lead to Joshua being offered a pre-traineeship to commence that Friday at Lidcombe TAFE.

This is a four-week course, including work placement.  It is envisaged that Joshua will then progress to a two-year traineeship in frames and trusses and then onto an apprenticeship in carpentry.

If it all goes according to plan, Joshua will also be following in dad’s footsteps as a builder.

According to mum, Joshua is a changed young man.

“It is so good to see him motivated and excited,’’ Claire Reid said.

“It happened so suddenly.

“He was at school on Monday and by Friday he had commenced his pre-traineeship.

“This is just what he needed. Thanks mwlp.”

It was actually a double win for mum Claire.

She won a $100 gift voucher to spend at Macarthur Square for simply liking MWLP on Facebook but said the win of her son being offered this amazing opportunity was worth so much more.

Claire spent the money on hi-vis wear and work boots.

What a fabulous outcome!
