The latest report issued by the Greater Sydney Commission shows that Western Sydney residents are being left behind by both State and Federal governments which are failing to address current issues and a lack of future planning.
“While there’s so much talk about how great Western Sydney Airport will be for this region, 16 per cent of Western Sydney residents still can’t access major hubs within 30 minutes, compared to just 5 per cent in most other parts of Sydney,’’ says Anne Stanley, the federal member for Werriwa.
“Every single day, residents of Western Sydney are finding it harder and harder
to access public transport to beat the increased tolls and traffic jams on our
roads,’’ she said.
“Successive Liberal governments have built big-ticket infrastructure projects in their favourite areas like the North-West Metro, NorthConnex and the CBD and eastern suburbs light rail.
“They’ve done this while forgetting about the residents of Western and South Western Sydney.’’
In the report, The Pulse of Greater Sydney, the Greater Sydney Commission calls for numerous strategies to be adopted for Western and South-Western Sydney.
These include support for collaboration areas including Liverpool and the Campbelltown-Macarthur health and education precinct.
“It’s a long bow to draw when residents can’t even park at their local train station and, even on the odd occasion that they can, the trains still run late three out of five evenings a week during peak,’’ Ms Stanley said, highlighting commuter parking issues at Edmondson Park station and the performance of the T8 Airport and South Line.
“The Greater Sydney Commission recognises the importance of Western and South Western Sydney, but the current State and Federal governments are doing nothing to support vital work in these priority areas.
“Let’s get public transport and roads fixed now so the Greater Sydney
Commission can deliver on collaborating on these priority areas,’’ Ms Stanley
said.
