The Ghosts
Pride of Macarthur: The Ghosts side selected for the final match of the season is (back row) scorer Cheryl Brain; Philip Wells; Sam Skelly; Iain Carlisle; Jarred Lysaught; Charlie Dummer; Jarrad Burke (captain); Jeff Mumford (Manager). Front: Nathan Baker; Jaidyn Simmons; Jordan Browne; Mitchell Carruthers; Aaron Yabsley; Luke Webb.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t looked like destiny all season but Campbelltown Camden Ghosts have fallen one match short of the chance to win their maiden premiership.

The 2017-18 season minor premiers were batted out of contention by Parramatta at a lifeless Old Kings Oval wicket on the weekend.

And, ironically, they did not even get to bat, but that’s cricket for you.

Ghosts, who needed to win the semi final to progress to the grand final, won the toss and sent Parramatta in to bat first.

The home side battled with extreme caution, knowing a draw was enough for them to make the grand final.

By the time the teams agreed to end proceedings on Sunday afternoon 114 overs had been bowled at Parramatta and they scored just 257 runs, barely more than two runs an over.

Incredibly, 42 of those overs were maidens, 16 by Ghosts skipper Jarrad Burke.

It did not help the Ghosts chances that play was delayed for three hours on Saturday due to wet conditions and stumps called early due to poor light with Parramatta at 1 for 78.

On Sunday the Ghosts took two wickets midway through the first session, Jaidyn Simmons and Aaron Yabsley taking sharp catches.

However, Parramatta continued to take no risks and skipper Jarrad Burke conceded at the tea break and the match was declared a draw.

“While the Ghosts are out of this year’s premiership, there is much to celebrate,’’ said club secretary Jason Ellsberg.

[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“Claiming the minor premiership has created club history and augurs well for another serious crack at the Belvidere Cup next year.’’[/social_quote]

Which is certainly right if they can keep this team together for another long cricket season.
