Look out: the ghost is back for another year in Campbelltown

There’ll be a distinct Japanese flavour to this year’s Festival of Fisher’s Ghost street parade, which this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Campbelltown-Koshigaya Sister City relationship.

The parade will makes its way along Queen Street on Saturday, November 1, as Campbelltown’s longest running community festival gets under way for another year.

Campbelltown City Council is calling on local community groups to enter the parade, which is a great chance to experience the festival atmosphere and profile your local group or business.

You don’t need a float to participate – walking groups are more than welcome, and there’s lots of prizemoney up for grabs across a range of categories.

Parade entrants are encouraged to reflect the Japanese theme, or be inspired by the legend of Fisher’s Ghost and Campbelltown’s unique history.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Lake, said this year’s parade would be a particularly special occasion with a delegation from Koshigaya City Office visiting Campbelltown as part of the celebrations.

“The Fisher’s Ghost street parade is a lively, energetic and colourful celebration of Campbelltown’s history and its people, and we look forward to welcoming our guests from Koshigaya at this special time,” Cr Lake said.

“I encourage local sporting groups, schools, organisations, businesses and all members of the community to consider joining our parade to experience the exciting festival atmosphere first-hand, and be a part of one of our city’s most popular annual traditions.

“Be inspired by our long-standing relationship with Koshigaya or proudly display the legend of our city’s famous ghost. There’s no reason to stick to one theme either – combine them both and let your creativity shine through,” Cr Lake added.

Contributions to the event may include floats, walking groups, puppets, costumes, musical instruments and/or choreographed movement, inspired by this year’s themes.

It’s free to enter, and registrations close on Friday, October 3, so be quick to join in the spirit.
