East Campbelltown Eagles are entrenched in the top four of the Sydney Shield rugby league premiership after a solid 25-16 away win over St Mary’s on the weekend.

The Eagles have recorded three wins and just the one defeat in four matches so far.

St Mary’s were one of two undefeated teams coming into round 5, but they came up against a determined East Campbelltown side.

Eagles posted first points, courtesy of fullback and eventual man of the match Shannon Gallant, which was converted for a 6-0 lead.

It soon turned to 12-0 when Grant Lahey crossed for the second try, but the home side hit back with a converted try of their own.

Sean Connor kicked a field goal on the stroke of half time to have the Eagles head to the sheds with a handy 13-6 lead.

However St Mary’s came out firing in the second stanza, scoring two tries to take the lead at 16-13.

But the Eagles took back the lead at 19-16 when Shannon Gallant crossed for his second try.

The Eagles sealed their victory seven minutes from fullime after Brett Lahey scored and Sean Connor converted for a final scoreline of 25-16.

Eagles head to Crestwood Oval to take on Hills District this Sunday, with a 1pm kickoff.

Defence went out the door when the Campbelltown Harlequins hosted traditional rivals Bowral on Saturday in the Illawarra rugby premiership.

Quins prevailed 45-42, a scoreline you don’t often see.

The other Macarthur club in the premiership, Camden Rams, went down 36-10 when they hosted Wollongong Tech Waratahs.

In the Sydney AFL Premier competition, Camden Cats 10.12.72 defeated US Bats 9.8.62 at Waverley on the weekend

Two wins from five matches so far have the Cats in sixth spot in the 10 team premiership ladder.

Macarthur’s premier AFL club in 2018 will host St George Dragons at Fairfax Reserve, Camden this Saturday, with a 4.30pm kickoff.

In soccer news, the Macarthur Rams are back home at Lynwood Park hosting the Western Sydney Wanderers this Saturday night, with a 7pm kickoff.

The Rams will be keen to get back in the winners’ list after their 2-1 defeat last round at the hands of Rydalmere Lions.

Just two wins and a draw so far this season have the Rams third from the bottom on the NPL men’s 2 ladder.
