Cool dudes: The Beards will be this year’s headline act at Fisher’s Gig, the big youth concert that is part of Fisher’s Ghost Festival.

South west Sydney’s largest annual youth music event, Fisher’s Gig, has secured comedy folk rock band, The Beards, as the headline act for this year’s event, to be held this Saturday, November 7, from 2pm to 9pm at Bradbury Oval.

Second headline act, punk rock/pop band, Three Strikes, will bring their electrifying style to the gig, with home grown Campbelltown band, Handheld Human, joining them as the local support.

Fisher’s Gig has been part of the annual Festival of Fisher’s Ghost celebrations since 1998, and has earned a reputation for launching young music careers.

With Third Hour, Insanity Proof, Stooge, the Winter Effect and solo artists, Snoteleks and Corey Woods, Fisher’s Gig will highlight the diversity of music that exists in the region.

Since forming in 2005 for a one-off show, The Beards have developed a cult following.

Their third album, released in 2011 – Having a Beard Is The New Not Having a Beard – was nominated for an ARIA award, while the lead single cracked Triple J’s Hottest 100.

The band has played music festivals across Australia, as well as Austin, Texas and Toronto, and recently toured Europe where they drew capacity crowds across the UK, Ireland, Germany, Denmark and The Netherlands.

They are currently touring Australia’s eastern states with The Ten Long Years, One Long Beard Anniversary Tour.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Hawker, said that although the headline acts bring a lot of excitement to the event, it will be Macarthur talent that will carry the show.

[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“Fisher’s Gig is one of Sydney’s premier youth music events and reflects Campbelltown’s vibrant youth culture and the festival’s community atmosphere,” Cr Hawker said.[/social_quote]

“It continues to provide a platform for launching the music careers of local artists and bands, and showcasing the depth of talent in the Macarthur region.

“Council is committed to providing a range of activities and events for young people to get involved in, and Fisher’s Gig is an opportunity to support young, local talent and enjoy an afternoon of great entertainment,” Cr Hawker said.

Fisher’s Gig is an environmentally sustainable event, and this year, Campbelltown Youth Network will promote sustainability initiatives with the “Sustain Yourselfie’’ project. Concert goers and the broader community will be encouraged to commit to an environmental pledge by taking a selfie, with environmental props, which will be posted on social media pages.

Fisher’s Gig is a free, all ages, drug and alcohol free event.
