Bush fire danger season ends tomorrow night, but don’t get complacent

This summer’s bush fire danger period for Macarthur will officially end at midnight tomorrow night, but residents are being urged to not become complacent.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) has declared an end to the statutory bush fire danger period in the Macarthur area from 11.59pm on Sunday, March 31.

From April 1, fire permits will no longer be required for the Campbelltown, Camden and Liverpool local government areas.

NSW RFS Inspector Nicholas Medianik said all members of the public must still abide by the law when conducting burning in the open air.

“Even though a fire permit is no longer a requirement, residents must still notify their neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning off,” Inspector Medianik said.

“Burning garbage, refuse, building materials or other waste is prohibited in the Campbelltown, Camden and Liverpool local government areas,’’ he said.

Burning off general vegetation also requires an environmental approval issued by the respective councils in all of these areas.

Residents who want to reduce bush fire fuels on their property require a bush fire hazard reduction certificate, and must have sufficient equipment to control and contain the fire to their property.

Anyone burning off without making the required notifications can be issued Infringement Notices of up to $2,200 for breaches of the Rural Fires Act 1997.

Despite milder conditions, there is always the potential for fires to threaten life, property and the environment, if not managed correctly.

Inspector Medianik said the local community should not become complacent to the danger of bush fire now that the danger period is officially over.

“I urge all residents to take the threat of bush fire seriously and prepare their families and home now,” Inspector Medianik said.

“Your local fire station or fire control centre can provide advice on how to safely undertake  hazard reduction work, and how best to prepare yourself, your property and your family for the next bush fire season.”
