Book Week in Liverpool all about fun and learning

656071-020bd3ee-fb59-11e3-9463-539ac6ca705bIn line with year’s national theme of Connect to Reading, Liverpool will celebrate Book Week 2014 during August 16-22 with local libraries offering fun and educational activities aimed at linking school-aged children with books.

“Liverpool libraries, in partnership with Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, have a great range of fun and enriching activities planned for families to celebrate Book Week 2014 together,” said the Mayor of Liverpool, Ned Mannoun.

“From a dress-up parade, to interactive author workshops, and the opportunity for children to write and illustrate their own short stories, Liverpool’s Book Week 2014 activities are all about connecting children with books and encouraging that all important life-long love of reading,” he said.

 

Activities include:

Book Parade Saturday,  August 16, Liverpool City Library Plaza, 11am

Kick off Book Week in style! Come dressed up as a character from your favourite book and participate in the Book Week parade. There will be prizes for best dressed, as well as lots of activities including face painting, a presentation for the Book Week writing competition, and special story times.

After School Author Workshop Wednesday, August 20, Liverpool City Library, 3.30pm

Author Patricia Bernard will be holding an after school writing workshop for children in school years 4-8. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask Patricia about her work and how she creates her stories. Children are welcome to attend both the school workshops as well as this one. School Author and Artist Visits

Local schools will have the opportunity to participate in special Book Week workshops with children’s author, Patricia Bernard and illustrator, Chewie Chan. In these workshops, children can explore their creativity and develop their writing skills – and then go to the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre to create illustrations for their short story. These workshops are during school hours and will be co-ordinated directly with schools.

Book Week Performances

See library staff dress up and act out this year’s shortlisted title, and learn about the Book Week books in a fun and interactive presentation. Books are from the following categories: Younger Readers, Picture Book, Early Childhood, Older Reader, Eve Pownall Award for Information Books. Book Week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia. Each year, schools and public libraries from all around Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators.
