Campbelltown City Council is eager to recognise local “unsung heroes’’ who have made a significant contribution to the community.

It’s encouraging locals to nominate worthy residents for the 2016 Campbelltown City Australia Day Awards.

Nominations are now open for the 2016 awards.

There are four award categories including Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year and Community Group Initiative of the Year.

Nominees must be Australian citizens and live in the Campbelltown Local Government Area, and community organisations must be based locally.

Recipients will be selected based on a range of criteria, including the type and quality of service, educational and sporting achievement, and individual acts of excellence, compassion, generosity or bravery.

Award recipients will be announced as part of Australia Day celebrations on January 26 next year.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Lake, said that Australia Day was the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of the “unsung heroes’’ that make Campbelltown a great place to live.

“Nominating someone for the 2016 Campbelltown City Australia Day Awards is easy to do,’’ Cr Lake said.

“It’s as simple as filling in a quick form and sharing what’s great about someone you know,” Cr Lake said.

“That person could be your next door neighbour who has spent a lifetime giving to others, or it could be someone you’ve never met and whose work you admire,” Cr Lake said.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, November 20.
