Local and Australian Youth Olympic Games hockey star Nathaniel Stewart was an inspiration to his team mates at the open age NSW Hockey State Championships held at Narellan earlier this month.

Outstanding individual performances by current and former South West Sydney Academy of Sport (SWSAS) athletes were a feature of the 2017 NSW Men’s Hockey Championships.

Staged right here in Macarthur’s Narellan Hockey Centre over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, the championships attracted large and vocal crowds.

Macarthur was represented by Metro South West association teams in the three divisions contested.

A year earlier Metro South West dominated the championships, but it was a feat the 2017 teams could not reproduce.

The 2017 teams, which boasted a high percentage of young players compared to the teams of a year earlier, did not manage to make the finals this time round.

But this didn’t take the shine off some brilliant individual performances by Academy hockey program members past and present.

In Division, Academy members Damian Chown and Karl Osbourne were outstanding in a team that was outclassed for the majority of its six games.

Ben Southwell also held his head high with eight other past Academy athletes in division 2, where his team was pipped for victory in a number of its games.

And recent Academy athletes Nathanael Stewart, Dylan Pardy, Jared Flanagan, Jackson Harrison, Landon Morley, Joshua Gregory and Ben Andaloro put in exceptional performances for our local association in the tough division one competition.

It was also great to see another past Academy athlete and current Australian Kookaburra Glenn Turner in good form and scoring goals, even if it was for our southern neighbours, Goulburn.
