Group 6 grand final
Campbelltown City celebrate their Group 6 grand final victory over Thirlmere last year. This year’s decider will be played on Sunday afternoon and ABC Grandstand will broadcast the game.

At this stage we only know that Picton Magpies have wrapped up the 2018 Group 6 country rugby league minor premiership.

The Magpies are a very good chance of being there for the final decider, which for the first time will be broadcast live from Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday, September 16 by ABC Grandstand.

The Oaks Tigers, who are in second place and last weekend defeated the Magpies in Picton, will also be strong contenders come finals time in a little over week, as will last year’s beaten grand finalists Thirlmere Roosters.

But whoever makes the grand final it shapes up as a beauty after an exciting home and away season.

Having ABC Grandstand broadcasting the decider will be icing on the cake for Group 6.

“Group 6 is delighted to be able to have the experienced ABC Grandstand commentary team at Campbelltown Stadium to call the showpiece event in local rugby league in 2018,’’ says Stephen Hazelton, Group 6 Rugby League executive officer.

“This year’s premiership has been one of the most open in recent years, and any of the five teams in contention could lift the Norman L Day Cup on grand final day, which will only enhance the coverage being provided across NSW and online by ABC Grandstand,’’ Mr Hazelton said.

The Group 6 grand final will be played on Sunday afternoon this year after a Saturday night timeslot in 2017 when Campbelltown City Kangaroos overwhelmed Thirlmere to win the trophy.

ABC Grandstand had a vacancy in their schedule and after discussions with Group 6 agreed to make a commitment to country rugby league by broadcasting the grand final on Sunday, September 16.

Group 6 Rugby League media officer Mike Shean says that although the final commentary team hasn’t been named as yet, “with the likes of Andrew Moore and Andrew Ryan working with ABC Grandstand, they’re familiar with Country Rugby League and Group 6 Rugby League’’.

“We are excited by the prospect of the coverage on September 16 and look forward to seeing the ABC Grandstand commentary team at Campbelltown Stadium on the day,’’ Shean said.
